In this final instalment of the Resilience is Key series, we look at emerging net zero building design and sustainable architecture. In the Caribbean, a smart building is no longer just energy efficient. It must also be storm-ready, cost-conscious, climate-aware and commercially viable. That is why the conversation around building design matters so much for our region.
Moore Global notes that buildings and infrastructure accounts for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, both from construction and operations such as lighting and air conditioning. Owners and developers, such as hotel chains and real estate investors, are under increasing pressure from stakeholders to be transparent about their entire supply chain. In the Caribbean, however, the issue goes beyond carbon. Our building choices sit at the intersection of tourism competitiveness, disaster resilience, insurance risk, operating costs and investor confidence.
There are clear signs of progress. IFC and CARICOM’s partnership to develop a Regional Green Taxonomy for the English-speaking Caribbean points to stronger momentum for climate-smart investment. At the same time, recent World Bank research underscores the need for more sustainable tourism operations, stronger local sourcing and resilient infrastructure. For the Caribbean, where tourism is both a major economic driver and highly vulnerable to climate shocks, building design is no longer just an architectural concern. It is a strategic business priority.
The next frontier for the Caribbean is likely to be resilient retrofitting rather than waiting for perfect net-zero new builds. Hotels, office buildings, industrial facilities and public infrastructure can all benefit from better cooling efficiency, renewable integration, water management, smarter materials, backup systems and stronger building standards.
In the near future, the buildings that stand out in the Caribbean will be the ones that lower costs, withstand shocks and strengthen brand value. Net zero is important. But for this region, resilience is the real differentiator.
