Across the Caribbean, banks, investors and even larger customers are asking a new set of questions: How efficiently do you use energy? How do you treat your people? Who signs off on key decisions? That’s ESG: environmental, social and governance. Simply put, how your business manages its impact and how it’s run.

The good news: SMEs don’t need a glossy sustainability report to get started. ESG is not as daunting as it sounds – especially for small businesses. What lenders want is credible, consistent information they can trust, because sustainability data is often the missing piece when financing SMEs.

Here’s a realistic “start small, show progress” approach that you can use to get started right away:

1) Waste and materials
• Do a quick waste walk-through: what you throw away, how often, and what it costs.
• Reduce first: right-size ordering, switch to reusable packaging, set up simple separation and a reliable disposal/recycling system.

2) Energy and water
• Track utility bills monthly and note the biggest drivers (A/C, lighting, equipment).
• Fix the basics: LEDs, maintenance schedules, leak checks, and consider a basic energy audit to identify quick wins.

3) People and governance
• Put in place “minimum standards” policies: health & safety, harassment, training, and grievance handling.
• Strengthen governance: clear roles, approval limits, simple documentation, and a code of conduct.

4) Reporting basics (one page is enough to begin)
Create an “ESG Snapshot”: 5–10 metrics (kWh, water, waste volumes, incidents, training hours), one key risk, and 2–3 targets for the next 12 months. This aligns you with the direction of global disclosure expectations (e.g., IFRS S1/S2 are now in effect internationally), without overwhelming your team.

With regional momentum in sustainable finance increasing, being “ESG-ready” can help your SME stand out when capital is tight.
