Introduction

Earlier this month, we would have done a piece on ESG and the Orange Economy. This article will focus on the ‘S’ in ESG – Sustainability. So, for many, carbon footprint sounds like “big company talk,” but it’s actually really simple: it’s the total greenhouse-gas emissions linked to your business activities, mainly from the electricity you use, the fuel you burn (or transport you rely on), and the materials and waste you generate. That includes everything from A/C and studio equipment to deliveries, generators, printing, and event logistics.

So why report it? Because what gets measured gets managed. Sustainability Reporting (SR) helps SMEs and creatives prove they’re responsible, well-run partners. Sponsors, corporate clients, and regional partners increasingly want transparency, especially for events, productions, and campaigns where environmental impact is visible. A basic carbon footprint “snapshot” can strengthen proposals, improve credibility, and highlight cost-saving opportunities (energy efficiency and smarter logistics often reduce bills).

In the Caribbean, we’re still playing catch up, but here’s a simple breakdown for SMEs & Creatives to follow:

A — Assess what you use (start with what you can see). Focus on the biggest drivers:

  • Electricity: A/C, lighting, equipment, refrigeration
  • Transport/Fuel: deliveries, travel, logistics, generators
  • Materials/Waste: printing, packaging, costume/set materials, disposal

B — Baseline your numbers (one month is enough to begin). No fancy tools needed:

  • 3–6 months of electricity bills (kWh + cost)
  • fuel/transport receipts (or mileage estimates)
  • simple waste tracking (bags/skip volume or disposal receipts)

C — Commit to small improvements and report them. Pick 2–3 actions for the next quarter:

  • LEDs, A/C servicing, shut-down routines
  • reduce printing, reusable backstage supplies, waste separation
  • route planning to cut trips and idle time

For agencies, artists, photographers, videographers, designers, and event producers, SR becomes part of your brand story: greener production choices, smarter logistics, and transparent reporting, all sponsor-friendly.
