Introduction

AI is no longer a future consideration. For Caribbean businesses, the real issue is whether it is creating value or simply adding cost. Moore Global notes that AI can drive productivity, innovation and better customer experiences, but only when deployed strategically. Since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT has become the world’s most widely used AI chatbot, with around 800 million weekly users, nearly 10% of the global population.

However, Moore Global cautions that rapid adoption does not guarantee profitability. The winners will be companies that move from experimentation to commercial discipline. While AI tools continue to expand, most organisations are still early in scaling them for enterprise value. Many report gains in innovation, with nearly half also citing improved customer satisfaction and competitive differentiation.

However, AI can be viewed as a double-edged sword from a sustainability and energy standpoint. Its supercomputing powers have the potential to help companies develop less energy-intensive ways of working, but AI-driven data centres themselves devour huge amounts of electricity and water. Already, a single hyperscale data centre can consume as much electricity annually as 100,000 homes and they are getting bigger and more energy intensive.

Closer to home, Trinidad & Tobago is beginning to put the policy foundations in place for more serious AI adoption. The Government has advanced a national AI readiness assessment, with the final National AI Readiness Report tentatively set for release in May 2026. This signals a shift beyond AI buzzwords toward governance, ethics, infrastructure and institutional readiness.

This matters because the Caribbean’s AI journey must be pragmatic, not performative. Businesses do not need AI for vanity, they need it for results: faster reporting, stronger forecasting, better customer engagement, leaner operations and sharper decision-making. The opportunity is particularly strong in finance, professional services, retail, tourism, logistics and customer-facing SMEs.

In the near future, the businesses that benefit most from AI in the Caribbean will be the ones that ask better questions: What problem are we solving? What process are we improving? What risk are we reducing? What return are we targeting?
