Many Caribbean businesses still see sustainability reporting as an issue for large multinationals. It is not. It is quickly becoming a supply chain requirement for businesses of every size, and those that adapt early will be better positioned to compete.
Moore Global’s research highlights an important shift that every business leader should be watching as large companies face mandatory disclosure requirements, their suppliers will be expected to provide stronger data on emissions, sourcing, transport and operational resilience. In other words, even smaller businesses are increasingly being drawn into the reporting chain.
For the Caribbean, this is especially significant. Our economies are highly vulnerable to external shocks, from volatile freight rates and rerouted shipping lanes to storms, tariffs and geopolitical disruption. For import-dependent island states, supply chain resilience is no longer simply an operational concern. It is a strategic imperative.
The region is beginning to respond. CARICOM has underscored the importance of deeper regional integration, stronger food security and closer production linkages, while also calling for greater intra-regional cooperation in an increasingly fractured global trade environment. Trinidad & Tobago’s National E-Commerce Strategy 2025–2030, described as the first of its kind in the Caribbean, also signals a move toward more digitally enabled trade and business systems.
While no regulator has worldwide powers, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) is becoming a global baseline for mandatory climate-related reporting in many jurisdictions. Mid-sized and smaller companies may gain competitive advantage and mitigate commercial risk by beginning emissions data reporting now rather than being backed into a corner by external factors.
What does this mean for Caribbean businesses? It means suppliers that can document their operations, digitise their processes, manage vendor risk, track data and respond quickly to disruptions will be more competitive. Those that cannot, may find themselves excluded from larger contracts, export opportunities or financing conversations. Where does your business stand?
